June Is Great Outdoors Month!
This June offers a special occasion to hit the road in an RV. By proclamation of President George W. Bush, June is Great Outdoors Month. This is the fourth annual Great Outdoors Month celebration, proclaimed as a means to celebrate the rich blessings of America’s natural beauty and to highlight a commitment to protecting our environment so that we can leave our children and grandchildren a healthy and flourishing land for outdoor enjoyment.
The Presidential proclamation states, “Through recreational activities such as fishing, skiing, biking, and nature watching, we can teach our young people about the wonders of our Nation’s landscapes. Experiencing our Nation’s natural splendor contributes to healthier lives for our citizens and a deeper appreciation for the great outdoors.” The text of the presidential proclamation may be downloaded by clicking the following link: 2007 Great Outdoors Proclamation (*.PDF)
Americans live amid many wonders of nature which we often take for granted. Our nation's varied landscapes include sandy beaches, expansive forests, emerald waters, barren deserts, bayous and wetlands, rolling farmlands, and towering mountains. Through biking, swimming, skiing, hiking, canoeing and many other activities complemented by RVing, Americans are enjoying our country’s magnificent scenery and the healthy benefits of outdoor recreation.
The official Great Outdoors Month calendars will list special events, demonstrations and outdoor volunteer opportunities starting June 1 and continuing through the celebration of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on July 8 on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
What can you do to celebrate Great Outdoors month? For starters, take a hike and really take in the sights and sounds around you – it might be near your home, but make it a goal to discover something interesting you never knew before. Clean up – pick an area you enjoy and head there to spend a few hours or a day making it more beautiful or team up with friends and neighbors and make it a community project to better the area in which you live – you’ll leave with a sense of pride and satisfaction of a job well done. Need more excitement? Join the growing numbers who embark on geocaching expeditions where they search for cache or “treasures” and spend time outdoors tracking the clues.
