The White Family's Story

A Wintery Getaway with Family

Learn more about why camping can be fun in all seasons, the best type of RV for four-season camping, and an ideal winter camping destination.

I don't think of winter as cold. I think of winter as warm. It's Christmas, it's family, it's gathering, it's lights, it's snowflakes. It's what we experienced this morning waking up and seeing these glistening mounds of sunshine on the snow.
The White Family | Explorers

The White family is an adventurous group that loves the outdoors and family time. Their trip to Granby, Colorado offered the perfect mix of the great outdoors and modern comfort thanks to the park model RV they stayed in. With all the amenities of home, their park model was the perfect base camp for their winter adventure.

While some people end their camping season before the first frost, others extend their camping season well into winter, or even camp year-round. Staying in a park model RV, like the Whites, is a comfortable way to experience nature, even when the temperatures drop.

Park Model RVs Are Ideal For Any Season

Park model RVs, used for seasonal camping, are recognizable by their similarity in design to a home. These RVs are built on wheels so that they can be moved easily from campground to campground or around a campsite and they need to be hooked up to site electricity, sewer, and water as with any RV.

Stand-out features of a park model RV include sleeping capacity for up to 10, a full-sized kitchen, a large living area, separate bedroom(s), ample storage space, and a full-sized bathroom and toilet.

In the winter, these features are even more appreciated as options become more limited in the cold weather and campground amenities and facilities close meaning you need to have a self-contained and self-sufficient rig.

Granby, Colorado makes for an ideal winter camping destination.

The Destination: Granby, Colorado

For skiing and winter sports enthusiasts, Granby, Colorado makes for an epic winter destination thanks to its location near Winter Park and Granby Ranch ski resorts. You can easily get to the towns of Boulder and Grand Lake for culture and dining options. Winter is also a great time to enjoy the area’s hot springs, particularly the nearby Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa.

Plus, Rocky Mountain National Park is less than 30 minutes away and is open in the winter for snowshoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing, and wildlife watching. If you have kids in tow, a ranger-led snowshoe walk is one of the best ways to safely see the park in winter.

Choosing Granby as your home base for a winter camping destination is a solid choice. When choosing a campground, make sure you find a resort or park with amenities (i.e. general store, restaurant, arcade room) that are open year-round so you have access to conveniences in case of a major storm.

Things To Keep In Mind When Winter Camping

Research your campground ahead of time as you’ll want to understand what amenities and services are open year-round. Some campgrounds might shut off water, while others have heated and insulated water spigots.

If you’re going to camp with a winterized RV, have a plan for using the bathroom, bathing, washing dishes, and accessing drinking water as you won’t have access to water. You’ll still be able to use your electric and gas-powered systems though.

This is why camping in a park model RV can be a great option when temperatures dip below freezing. Still, you’ll want to be extra prepared with safety and emergency items, as well as extra clothing, kitchen, and outdoor gear.

And if you’re not up for a cold-weather winter camping trip, you can always head to a snowbird destination like Arizona, California, and Florida

Lofts the kids love

The loft area in a park model can be used as storage but is most often utilized as bunkhouse and fort for the kids. It's just enough to give kids the privacy of their own space but allows them to feel connected to the main living area.

Park Model Large Bedroom

Large Bedroom

Bedrooms in park models are completely closed off from the rest of the unit and the high cielings make it feel like a private oasis. Often equipped with a queen size bed, many are large enough to include a king size bed with plenty of closet space, cabinets, and more.
