Keith's Story

Game Day Greatness

Former NFL player Keith Sims finally gets to kick back and enjoy his own tailgating experience in style after 11 years of being the one on the field.

We tailgate in comfort: We have TVs to watch the early games and we don’t have to worry about traffic afterward because we hangout and watch the late games.

Keith’s “Touchdown Tailgate” Steak Marinade

Ingredients

  • Generous cuts of ribeye or porterhouse steak
  • 1/4 clove of chopped garlic
  • 1 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt/pepper
  • And my secret ingredient: your favorite Italian dressing. Trust me on this one.

Preparations

Place steak in a ziptop bag or plastic container. Add chopped garlic - I love the flavor fresh garlic gives the steak. Add Worcestershire sauce. Add a generous amount of Italian dressing. Let it sit and marinate for a few hours in the fridge, or overnight. Take the steaks out of the fridge 30 minutes to an hour before cooking. Get the grill nice and hot, then place the steaks on it and add salt and pepper. Cook to desired temperature. Insider tip: Chop an onion and wrap it in foil with butter, garlic, and a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce. Then place it on the grill next to the steaks; you’ll love the flavor it adds to your meal.

For the last decade, professional football player Keith Sims has embraced the exhilaration of game day. Now, after 11 NFL seasons playing for the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins, Keith is enjoying football in a new way: tailgating in his RV.

The Adrenaline Rush of Game Day

When Keith remembers past game days, the emotion and the excitement stand out. “I used to get there 4-5 hours before kickoff,” he recalls. “You walk out on that field, the grass was immaculate, the smell. And you run out for kickoff and there’s 80,000 screaming fans cheering you on. It’s hard to replace that in life— that adrenaline rush.”

During his time as a football player, the adrenaline would sometimes linger even after the game.  “If we didn’t win, I couldn’t eat after a game. I couldn’t sleep,” Keith says.

A New Experience

Now, in this new chapter of life, Keith’s football experience is a little different. He can be found enjoying the football game while tailgating in his RV— a space designed for relaxation and contentment.

“I can watch the games and I can enjoy them,” Keith says, adding: “We tailgate in comfort. We have TVs to watch the early games. We don’t have to worry about traffic after because we watched the late games. We’ve got our own bathroom.”

The RV Advantage

For Keith Sims, the RV is more than just a vehicle; it’s a way for him and his loved ones to comfortably enjoy a lifelong passion. His RV has also provided Keith with his first opportunity to enjoy the tailgating atmosphere.

“I’ve played football since I was in high school and I’m just now getting to enjoy what tailgating is like,” he reflects. “It’s better than I ever expected.”

Lessons from the Tailgating Party

  • Get ready to relax. Viewing a sport in a comfortable, controlled space, such as an RV, enhances the experience and creates more enjoyment.
  • Foster connections. Tailgating with others is a great way to build a sense of community with those around you.
  • Embrace change. It’s important to recognize that sometimes a familiar sport or activity can be appreciated in a new way.

Keith & Tia Sims

After 11 years in the trenches of the NFL, Keith Sims was ready for a change of pace. Little did he know his wife, Tia, had been plotting for this moment for years, and had long ago decided that they and their three boys were going to discover new roads in an RV. They now spend more than 100 days and nights each year touring the country, and use the travel experiences to enhance the boys’ homeschool education.
