Mikhail Martin, a native New Yorker and co-founder of Brothers of Climbing, discovered a passion for rock climbing that expanded his world beyond the city limits. "When you grew up in the city you live in a bubble... there's so many different walks of life and different points of view, but you'll never know that unless you go see it for yourself." Realizing the lack of diversity in the climbing community, he co-founded Brothers of Climbing, an organization dedicated to bringing people of color into the sport and the outdoors.
Through climbing trips across the country in their RV, the group showcases the beauty and accessibility of nature, breaking down barriers and stereotypes. "We want to show people of color that they can do it, and that we are here doing it." The organization provides a platform for people of color to connect, share experiences, and challenge themselves in a supportive environment.
Mikhail's story emphasizes the transformative power of outdoor adventure and the importance of representation in outdoor spaces. Brothers of Climbing is more than just a climbing group, it's a movement that promotes inclusivity and encourages everyone to explore the world beyond their neighborhoods.
In a world often portrayed as divided, Mikhail’s experiences on the road have shown him the inherent goodness in people. "There's a lot of goodness and kindness in the world, and people are genuinely interested in how you're living." He believes in the power of connection and conversation, and Brothers of Climbing serves as a catalyst for building bridges and fostering understanding.
As Mikhail continues his climbing journey, he envisions a future where Brothers of Climbing becomes an international organization, connecting like-minded individuals from all walks of life. The organization's message is clear: the outdoors is for everyone, and with support and encouragement, anyone can discover the joy and freedom of climbing and exploring the natural world.
