Interested in a hunting trip during your next RV getaway? Here are some of the best campgrounds for hunting expeditions.

As summer comes to an end, many RV enthusiast transition into fall activities, which include hunting whitetail deer, elk, waterfowl, and other species. Many independently owned campgrounds are located in areas that can serve as excellent base camps for hunting activities, including campgrounds that are part of the Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA), Spacious Skies, Thousand Trails and USA Camping Company networks.

While hunting regulations vary by state, there’s plenty of easily accessible information online that can be helpful in planning hunting trips on both public and private lands. Here’s a sampling of campgrounds across the U.S. and Canada with information on nearby hunting locations:

  • Seward KOA Journey in Seward: This campground, which is open through Sept. 30, is close to the famous Kenai Peninsula as well as Chugach National Forest. Nearby game include moose, black bear, mountain goats, sitka, black-tailed deer, and waterfowl.
  • Kamiah/Clearwater River KOA Journey in Kamiah: This campground is close to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. Nearby game include elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, black bear, mountain lion, wolf, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, upland birds, and waterfowl.

  • Ozarks Landing RV Resort in Lake Ozark: This campground can serve as a base camp for hunting trips near Lake of the Ozarks. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offers managed deer hunts at Lake of the Ozarks from mid-September through mid-January. Hunts are available for archery, muzzleloading, crossbow, and modern firearms, and some are specifically for youth or people with disabilities. 
  • Polson/Flathead Lake KOA Holiday in Polson: This campground, which is open through mid-October, is close to Flathead National Forest. Nearby game include elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, black bear, mountain lion, wolf, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, moose, upland birds, and waterfowl.

  • Thousand Trails Circle M in Lancaster: This campground is a 15 minute drive from State Game Lands Number 288 in Lancaster County and a 40-minute drive from State Game Lands Number 82 in York County. The principle species hunted in Game Lands 288 are white tail deer, turkey and squirrels. Furbearer trapping opportunities include red fox, raccoon, and mink. Game Lands 82 provides opportunities for hunting turkey, deer, bear, and small game. The region is home to several rivers, streams, and ponds that are perfect for fishing. Anglers can try their luck catching species such as trout, bass, and catfish.

  • Thousand Trails in Scotrun: This campground is a 20-minute drive from State Game Lands Number 38 in Monroe County. This game land is a popular destination for hunting white‐tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, grouse, snowshoe hare, and timber rattlesnakes. Fur taking opportunities include beaver, raccoon, gray fox, coyote, and mink. Waterfowl hunting opportunities exist on wetlands throughout the game lands
     

  • Adventures on the Gorge in Lansing: This campground can serve as a base camp for hunting in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Hunting is allowed in the Preserve, subject to regulations that can be viewed online. Details on West Virginia hunting regulations and seasons can be viewed with this link. Hunting seasons include wild boar, deer, bear, turkey, squirrel, ruffed grouse, bobwhite quail, rabbit, raccoon, fox, bobcat, skunk, opossum, woodchuck, weasel, English sparrow, European starling, and pigeon.
