Keep These Tips in Mind for Spring RV Travel!

Kenda Americana's top tips for hitting the road in your RV this spring.

As the warmer months approach, more RVers will hit the road in search of adventure and relaxation. However, before you embark on your next journey, it’s crucial to ensure both your vehicle and RV are ready for the road ahead. Here are five essential tips from Kenda Americana to keep you safe and prepared for towing season:

1. Create a Pre-Departure Safety Checklist

Before heading out, a thorough pre-departure safety check is essential to ensure a smooth trip. Start by checking and adjusting the tire pressure on both your tow vehicle and trailer, including the spare tire. Don't forget to tighten the wheel lug nuts/bolts on both vehicles to the correct torque. A quick visual inspection of your tires and wheels will also help you spot any irregularities or debris that could be an issue during your travels.

2. Load Your Trailer Properly

When it comes to towing, balance is key. Proper weight distribution in your RV is essential to maintaining control and stability while driving. RVs are built with this in mind but as you pack it with all your essentials make sure 60% of the total load is positioned in front of the tires. A tail-heavy trailer can cause instability, so take the time to carefully distribute the weight and ensure it is well-secured.

3. Know Your Stopping Distance

Additional weight from your RV trailer and its load can significantly increase your stopping distance, so it’s important to maintain an adequate distance from other vehicles on the road. Keep an eye on road conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. Prolonged or hard braking can overheat your brakes and reduce their effectiveness. By leaving plenty of space between you and the car ahead, you can better respond to changes in traffic and road conditions without relying on frequent or sudden braking.

4. Check the Weather

Before you hit the road, make sure to check the weather forecast and stay updated throughout your trip. RV trailers can behave differently in inclement weather, so understanding your trailer tires’ traction in rain or snow is crucial. Prepare for potential weather changes by adjusting your driving and speed. Being proactive in understanding conditions will ensure you stay safe, especially if you're dealing with slippery or wet roads.

5. Handle Trailer Sway the Right Way

Encountering trailer sway can be unsettling, but the most important thing to remember is to remain calm and take the proper actions. When towing a hitch-mounted RV, if you experience sway, gas off, brake off, steer straight, and wait. Don’t try to counteract the sway by jerking the steering wheel, as this can worsen the situation. If you have a brake controller, gently apply the trailer brakes to help stabilize the trailer and regain control.

Whether you’re a seasoned RVer or hitting the road for the first time, these precautions will ensure your journey is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Have a successful, safe, and fun spring season!
