Memorial Day honors the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. “Originally known as ‘Decoration Day,’ it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971,” according to History.org.
Memorial Day weekend also marks the official beginning of the summer camping season. It’s the weekend when most campgrounds open their swimming pools and waterparks and begin their summer schedule of weekend activities..
Many campgrounds celebrate Memorial Day with red, white and blue parades and barbecues, others honor our veterans with letter writing activities, storytelling sessions and ceremonies to honor their sacrifices on behalf of our country. Others organize patriotic crafts, barbecues, pool parties, and dances with live music.
